Hibiscus syriacus - Purple Rose of Sharon with Single and Double Flowers


This is a double flower purple Rose of Sharon. I photographed this during a visit to the Seen Hock Yeen Chinese temple in Chemor, Perak.

This single flower purple Rose of Sharon was photographed at the rooftop Secret Garden of 1-Utama.


Scientific name: Hibiscus syriacus
Common name: Rose of Sharon, Korean Hibiscus, Rose of Althea
Family: Malvaceae
Native plant of: East Asia

It is the National Flower of South Korea
Korean name : mugunghwa (Hangul: 무궁화; Hanja: 無窮花).
The flower's symbolic significance stems from the Korean word mugung, which means "immortality".*

  11. I haven't seen the multipetalled type, but i love even just the single pelalled. However, those i found are very susceptible to aphids, more than the ordinary native hibiscus.

  17. Hi AB, is the rose of sharon plant easily available? Haven't noticed them in the local garden nurseries. Would appreciate it if you let me know where I can get a plant in the Klang valley area. That photo of the double is great.You've got my attention.

  23. There are other colours of Rose of Sharon but I like the purple colour most, both the single and double petal flower varieties. The single flowers ones have a large and fat pistil which is so lovely.

    Andrea is right. In Malaysia, the plant is susceptible to aphids and it is difficult to make them bloom repeatedly.

    Rosie, I have not seen this plant for sale at our local nursery yet. Perhaps you need to get a cutting from a friend. Hence, if we see them for sale at nurseries, we should immediately get one.
