Hibiscus at Taman Botani Putrajaya

4. Hibiscus schizopetalus, 6. Hibiscus schizopetalus - Pagoda, The others (1,2,3,5,7,8,9) - Hibiscus Rosa sinensis hybrids

I visited The Botanical Garden of Putrajaya recently and took these pictures along the Hibiscus Walk. In Malaysia we can find many many types of hibiscus flowers that grows well in our climate and soil.

Hibiscus is our National Flower and the actual species is Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Brilliant Red).

Currently, I have 3 hibiscus plants (all Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) in my garden. I have tried eating its buds (stamens included) and petals and it tasted good. Blastoise, my pet tortoise love eating hibiscus flowers too. I'd love to grow flower no. 9 in my garden as it is so gorgeous. If I have a bigger space, I'll grow flower no. 4 H. schizopetalus (common name: chinese lantern/japanese lantern) and let it spread out gracefully over an arched arbor.

Do you have hibiscus in your garden and which one is your favourite?

My post today is dedicated to Nancy from Austin, Texas, USA of Nancy's Notes blog (first commenter). She is currently having a very happy occassion and do head over to her blog with your best of the best wishes!

  6. Dear Autumn Belle, Sadly, I do not grow Hibiscus in my garden but I do know them to be very beautiful shrubs indeed, as your images capture perfectly.

I had no idea that this is the National Flower of Malaysia, nor either that it is edible. How very fascinating.

  7. Autumn Belle hibiscus are beautiful and I love the single flowers. The only problem with them is that mealy bugs love them too. I have lost quite a few of them to that pest.

  8. Hi Autumn Belle. It is wonderful to be able to have so many varieties that can be grown in your climate. They have to be very hardy here or kept indoors.I only have one and since my seed germination trials are not going well it looks like it may be the only one I get.
I have a Lord Baltimore that is bright red and has large blooms.
I enjoy looking at your though. The doubles age very pretty but there is something about a pure white one that I adore.

  11. Very beautiful hibiscus pictures! I have "calorina breeze hibiscus", or "Hibiscus rosa-sinensis" in my garden. Their buds color is red, but once open it shows the orange color. I also have some cuttings in the pots, hope they can survive. I love hibiscus, only they do need more spaces that I can offer.

  12. They're lovely! I think I like the sort of classic looking hibiscus - like #2. A people people here and there have these plants, and they're really eyecatching from the road, but I have yet to see anyone do it right. It looks sort of odd and fake in our zone. People usually have them all by themselves in a corner or something rather than incorporated in a landscape design. I bet they are used really well in your area!

  13. beautiful flowers Autumn Belle. I will try to post some photos of Hibiscus hybrids done here now. In the last research review i attended last week i met the breeder and he brought an arrangement, including a bluish gray flower. He is inviting me to his garden of unusual colors but i cannot go there yet, as it is far from my office.

  14. Hibiscus is really beautiful and I love all the colours! Glad to know that there's a garden such as this one. The residents in Putrajaya (like Bangchik & Kakdah) are so fortunate to have such a beautiful garden there. Happy visiting gardens :-D

  15. I have the flower no. 2, 5, 7 and a orange colored one too. Unfortunately the buds are being chewed off by some pest and I am trying hard to find what those could be...
    Wonderful shots!

  17. I didn't know you could eat Hibiscus flowers . I used to grow one inside my house, but it was too dry for it and it eventually lost all it's leaves.

  18. Hi Autumn Belle, what a lovely variety of hibiscus you show us. We've had your national flower in a pot on our patio for years - the deep red H. rosa-sinensis. It has to be cut way back and taken in for the winter, but is worth it for the splash of exotic color it produces all summer long. Many people here have winter-hardy hibiscus hedges, usually pale purple in color. Thanks, by the way, for your comments on my blog! Barbara
